The Foghorn

The Foghorn is an award-winning micropub in Hove. It was founded in 2018 by three beer enthusiasts - Tommy, Niall and Tim - with a focus on what they feel pubs are all about: community and great independent beers treated with care.

While it was their love of real beer and the independence that defines a ‘micropub’ that first inspired the trio to open the Foghorn, it was their own fiercely independent spirit and forward-thinking inclusive view which shaped the pub’s atmosphere, and helped to attract a diverse customer base and loyal local following. We felt strongly that it was important these values were reflected in the brand identity.

Foghorn Hove pub signage design

Good Noise were retained to update the pub’s visual identity and apply it across various assets, including the exterior of the building, signage, glassware, print, social assets and website

A series of workshops with the team allowed us to really get to know the owners, and it became clear that their collective personalities and values were at the very heart of everything they did.

We re-designed the Foghorn logotype, which included an androgynous figure to reflect inclusivity. The deliberate hand-finished appearance of the logo highlights the pub’s homegrown, independent nature.

The exterior mural was a defining feature which set the pub apart from a traditional boozer, while simultaneously making the building an instant landmark on the high street corner it is located. Our aim was to bring a sense of playfulness and fun to the venue and make clear their reaction against the seriousness and exclusivity sometimes associated with beer purism.

Another important consideration for the illustration was to include elements which could be extracted and repurposed across promotional materials and communication. The full mural depicts a journey featuring the three founders, and includes iconic landmarks from the local area - from the coast up to the South Downs.

Good Noise worked closely with local artist and signwriter, Anna Carlson who recreated our illustration by hand with pin-point perfection on the building exterior over a week-long period. The end result is visually stunning and has received a great response from the local community.

The identity was also applied across glassware and the pub’s ephemera, as well as social media channels and website.

"Good Noise got the project straight away right from the off, they knew what we were about and what we wanted to do and we loved their ideas and couldn’t be happier”
