Capsule Records

Capsule Records is a new record store and coffee shop in Brighton and Hove, established by a team of passionate music lovers who have recently relocated from London to the south coast.

The store’s main mission is to simplify the process of discovering new music on vinyl - steering customers towards new artists, labels and collections - and to shake off the often-held perception that record stores can be an intimidating shopping experience.

Our approach was to hold a series of workshops and discussions with our client to shape the brand’s position in a busy market. We carried out research into the local competition and defined its core customer before digging into the brand’s unique DNA. 

We wanted to create an identity for the brand that felt cool, established and forward thinking, whilst maintaining a natural, friendly and familar feel throughout. 

We felt strongly that much of the enjoyment that comes with buying new music was centred around a non-stop journey of discovery, how listening to one artist or song could open up paths to timeless musical landscapes. 

We represented this graphically with constantly shifting shapes full of colour and movement, combining this with a strong, bold logotype and icon. 

The brand assets were used digitally across web and social media, as well as in the store itself.

We worked closely with the store’s interior designer throughout the project, remaining sensitive to their mid-century styling, and remaining focused that the brand identity complemented the look and feel of the physical space. 

We applied large wall graphics, lit signage and simple a messaging to the store interior, and designed a flexible display framed by a classic neon sign for the front window - adding warmth to the shop exterior.

Our scope of works also included designs for t shirts, tote bags and poster templates which are used to display promotions both in-store and externally. 

For the Capsule Records launch party we also produced custom labels for ‘Disco Juice’ Lager which was given away to all party goers. The name was a reference to the unusual substance you find on your trainers after a night on the dance floor. It tasted better.
